Fernweh Woodworking...now open!
I operate Fernweh Woodworking from the shop on our property in Central Oregon. I love creating beautiful things. I love the feel of smoothly sanded wood and the smell of natural oils that bring out grain that has always been there, just under the dirt and roughness. Other times I exploit that old grey weathered board, utilizing the age and weathering to evoke memories of open country, green fields, and history.
I loved my past jobs, including being a Marine and a wildland firefighter, but many times I found myself pining for time in my shop and the smell of fresh cut wood. Now I have the opportunity to not only work for myself, but to be working with my hands at something I enjoy.
Fernweh is a German word which means to be homesick for somewhere you've never been. In my mind, it's that feeling you get when you look at a sunset over a mountain range, or look up at a mountain that you're about to climb, knowing you'll be at the top soon. The innate knowledge that there is a beyond.
